- New 7-Seater Wagon R to be launched for the Indian market
- Launch in June
- To be rebadged as Maruti Suzuki Solio may get an all-new name.
- Will be sold through Nexa retail network
After the ‘Diesel Phase Out‘ news, here’s another news from Maruti Suzuki, only this time a happy one. At the beginning of the year, we got the all-new Wagon R. Based on a new platform and fitted with new engines, the hatchback is still one of the best offerings from the Indian automaker. Reportedly, Maruti Suzuki is getting ready to launch a 7-seater version of their hero offering. The company will launch the MPV next month and it will be up for sale through the company’s premium retail network Nexa. Since it will be offered through Nexa, Maruti Suzuki may rename the nameplate.
The decision is still in the final round of talks. The discussion might be about the challenges that the existing Wagon R may face due to the new 7-seater version. Also, the choice between the Nexa and the Maruti Suzuki Arena retail strategy. While even the new Wagon R continues to be sold through MS Arena, the possibility that the new 7-seater version may be sold through Nexa is low.
However, there are reports suggesting that Maruti Suzuki may rebadge the Wagon R to Solio. Does the name ring a bell? The Suzuki Solio is a 5-seater MPV that sells in the Japanese market. At the 2012 Auto Expo, Maruti Suzuki had showcased the tall-bodied MPV. Cut to 2019, the Suzuki Solio was showcased at the Future Mobility 2019 along with the all-electric Wagon R. The Solio will be positioned as a premium product loaded with premium features. It may also be placed above the Ertiga. With the new 7-seater premium model, Maruti Suzuki will keep it away from the tourist vehicle business.
Talking about specifications, the new 7-seater MPV may get the K12M 1.2-litre petrol engine that does duties for the current Wagon R. The petrol unit will be mated to a 5-speed transmission helping to churn out 82 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. The MPV will be offered with both – manual and automatic transmission.
Other car makers are also making news about their new and upcoming MPVs. Renault is prepping up the Triber while Kia is making plans for the Ray. On launch, the new Maruti Suzuki Model will lock horns with these offerings.
